WHAT ABOUT POTASSIUM?

Throughout the years, health crazes come and go. Crash diets, wonder drugs and trendy mythology pass through the transom of general health as fast as any category of postmodern society. That being said, the caveat against using too much table salt and getting too much dietary sodium is one of few exceptions. This standard of general well-being remains. For decades and decades, doctors and laypersons have attempted to keep their blood pressure at healthy levels by reducing their intake of salt despite the fact that this simple chemical element is a universal seasoning for the wide spectrum of culinary creations around the globe. But, perhaps we're thinking about it the wrong way. Perhaps, we need to supplement our diets with something to balance our blood pressure instead of eliminating sodium all together. New research confirms that supplementing one's diet with more potassium is just as important as keeping the salt consumption in check. Could this formula for ingestion be a large part of the solution?

According to the article entitled "More Dietary Potassium as Important as Less Sodium For Cardiovascular Health" by Dale Kiefer in the August 2009 issue of Life Extension, "Investigators affiliated with Harvard Medical School gathered data from more than 2,000 men and women with pre-hypertension, whose progress was monitored for 10 to 15 years. Sodium to potassium excretion rates from 24-hour urine collections were compared with the incidence of cardiovascular disease events, such as stroke, heart attack, or death from cardiovascular disease."

Yes, this is quite an elaborate and time-consuming experiment. And, can you guess what the results suggest?

According to researchers, "A higher sodium to potassium excretion ratio is associated with increased risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease, with an effect stronger than that of sodium or potassium alone."

To conclude, it seems silly for any one person to completely deprive themselves of so many delicious and interesting dishes that celebrate the splendors of salt. Eating healthy can still be an adventure. Of course, moderation is the key and now you have a way to help balance the sodium. Get yourself a reliable source or supplement of potassium.
