NO BONES TO PICK WITH VITAMIN C

Between the powerful trends of breast cancer awareness, menopause and the craze of preventing HPV, men are sometimes left out of the loop of health and well-being. Well, today's news strictly applies to men for once. Sorry, ladies.

The news item involves bone density. With all the attention that heart disease and cancer prevention hogs, sometimes the skeleton gets overlooked. But, of course, it is our basic framework. Our bones are the foundation upon which our bodies are built. In other words, an unhealthy skeleton is like a city's skyline without steel beams. It would be useless.

So, I am pleased to announce that a new study reveals how elderly men can keep their bones strong and healthy. It's really quite simple and it involves our old friend, vitamin C. Results show that vitamin C is vital for collagen formation and that collagen makes up 90 percent of the bone matrix. So, getting more vitamin C through your diet or through nutritional supplements will keep the bones of elderly men strong and healthy.

According to the article "Higher Vitamin C Intake May Prevent Bone Loss among Elderly Men" in the January 2009 issue of Life Extension, "Researchers at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University analyzed data from the Framingham Osteoporosis Study to determine intake of vitamin C, average bone mineral density (BMD) at baseline, and changes in BMD over four years among more than 800 elderly men and women."

This study conclusively illustrates that a higher intake of vitamin C will reduce the amount of bone mineral density loss associated with aging and a myriad of other possible factors. Of course, this only applies to the elderly men. There was no correlation between vitamin C intake and bone mineral density in women. But, don't worry. We'll have plenty of nutritional tips and news for females here in the future. In the meantime, tell your husbands, boyfriends and guy friends to stock up on citrus fruits and vitamin C nutritional supplements now, because it's never too early to start. At the very least, they won't go scurvy.
